Above is the gps tracklog for the short hike up the road. Andrea and Thor went with me, but Andrea's sinus infection conspired against us so it was a short hike. I say it was still productive, because the change from hiking around flat Socorro to hiking up a grade with a backpack definitely took a toll on me.
Most interesting is that, for the first time in my life, I weighed the stuff I took with me to see how bad it was.
Item | Weight |
sunglasses | 24g |
socks | 62g |
gps | 86g |
sunscreen | 142g |
shorts | 218g |
headlamp | 226g |
t-shirt | 258g |
trekking poles | 398g |
junkbag | 684g |
first aid kit | 718g |
water | 864g |
hammock | 1048g |
raingear | 1144g |
shoes | 1236g |
pack | 2475g |
digital camera | 12510g |
TOTAL: 22093g
The junkbag is a sack of useful things. It has a U-Dig It shovel, toilet paper, compass, medical allergy tags, whistle, signal mirror, shoelaces, garbage bag, space blanket, two mini maglites (but no batteries) and probably a few other things.
The junkbag aside, I was carrying 22kg of stuff. The things I actually used, not counting the camera, were only 2282g. And of those things, I could have skipped the 86g gps and 398g trekking poles.
I've always packed heavy. I should stop that.
